MOAB: hybrid drive,
built for the desert.

A Jeep JL-based hybrid off-road race truck, built to show that extended-range hybrid drive works where it's hardest: in the desert.

The Story

Why we built MOAB

Desert racing punishes everything: hundreds of miles of rock, silt and whoops, extreme heat, and nowhere to plug in. That's exactly why we race there.

MOAB starts from a Jeep JL and becomes a purpose-built hybrid race truck. It's DXR Dynamics' rolling test bench. Every mile it runs is data that goes straight back into our range-extension technology.

The question MOAB is built to answer is simple: can extended-range hybrid drive go the distance off-road, where battery-only vehicles have to stop?

We're building it in the open, from bare chassis to race day, and sharing what we learn along the way.

How It Works

Extended-range hybrid drive

MOAB is a series hybrid. The engine never drives the wheels. Its only job is to make electricity.

1 · Diesel generatorAn onboard diesel engine turns a generator.
2 · BatteryThe generator keeps the battery charged on the move.
3 · Electric driveElectric motors drive the wheels with instant, controllable torque.
4 · Keep goingRefuel instead of recharge, so it can keep going where EVs stop.
Build Highlights

Built for the long haul

Currie axles

Heavy-duty axles front and rear, built to take desert and rock abuse.

Fox shocks

Race-valved Fox suspension for high-speed whoops and big hits.

Method wheels

Race wheels chosen for strength and serviceability.

Protected steering

The hydraulic steering ram is tucked behind the tie rod, out of the line of fire from rocks.

Desert cooling

Cooling sized for long, hot, slow sections, not just a quick sprint.

Clean air

Multi-stage air filtration built to survive hundreds of miles of dust without service.

The Goal
500+

off-road miles. No stops.

Our goal is to run 500+ off-road miles without stopping. It's a target we're building toward, and every test and race gets us closer.
